How to request an absentee ballot

In Maine, a registered voter may vote by absentee ballot for any reason. There are several options:

1. Request an absentee ballot online by clicking hereUse this link to obtain an accessible ballot if you have a disability that makes it difficult for you to use a paper ballot.

2. Call the Town Office at 785-3658 and we will mail an absentee ballot to you.

3. Come in to the Town Office. You can vote in person at the Town Office or you can take a ballot with you and return it in person (see drop box information below) or by mail or by an immediate family member.

4. An immediate family member can pick up an absentee ballot at the Town Office for you.

If none of the above options work for you and you need to have a non-family member pick up a ballot for you, call the Town Office and we will explain how you can do this.

The deadline for requesting an absentee ballot, except in certain emergency situations, is five days prior to the election. For the November 2, 2021 election, the deadline is 4:00 p.m. on October 28.

(Note: The deadline for requesting an absentee ballot is Thursday, October 28, except in certain special circumstances.)

Absentee Ballot Drop Box

A drop box is located outside in the front of the building before the entry. Ballots may be placed in the secure drop box. All ballots placed in the drop box by 8:00 p.m. on November 2, 2021 will be processed. Any ballots placed in the drop box after 8:00 p.m. on November 2nd will be rejected.

Special Circumstances Absentee Voting

After the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot without a reason, voters may request an absentee ballot by completing and signing a Special Circumstances Application.

On the Application the voter must indicate which of the four allowable reasons to request an absentee ballot after the deadline applies to them, as follows:

1. Unexpected absence from the municipality during the entire time the polls are open on Election Day; or

2. Physical disability; or

3. Incapacity or illness that has resulted in the voter being unable to leave home or a treatment facility; or

4. Inability to travel to the polls if the voter is a resident of a coastal island ward or precinct.
